I published my first - and hopefully not last - book earlier this year shortly after I retired from the police after 31 years of service. In The Fall of Policing, I reflect on my varied and diverse career serving in two police forces from rural Aberdeenshire in north-east Scotland to inner city Birmingham (via Glasgow and Edinburgh), concluding my career as a chief superintendent at the College of Policing.
I witnessed first hand the demise of the once trusted and highly regarded British police service over the course of at least two decades. Inexperienced and ineffective police leadership, the loss of a sense of ‘mission’ which instills in officers the duty to prevent crime and catch criminals, and an over-politicised influence on the police service are all factors which have contributed to the current sorry state of affairs. It has been the indulgence in divisive identity politics, social justice crusades, and an unrelenting obsession with diversity, equity, and inclusion, however, which has had the most devastating and pernicious impact on the British police service. From promoting the wrong people to senior policing roles on the grounds of ‘diversity’, to officers taking the knee at black lives matters protests, to dancing around with rainbow coloured face paint at LGBT+ Pride events, the police service has lost its sense of neutrality, professionalism, and crucially the ability to be considered proficient at even its basic core functions such as preventing and investigating crime. Somewhat prophetically, I also highlight he concept of ‘two-tier policing’ which sadly I predict would become a growing issue for the police service, particularly for London’s Metropolitan Police, easily the most politicized police force in the land. I wasn’t wrong!
My goal is for as many people as possible to read my book, not to make money (as a self-published author I really don’t), but because I passionately believe that the public deserve to know what’s happened to its police force, and why we are in the state we are in. For some reason, Amazon won’t allow me offer the Kindle edition of the book for free which is what I wanted to do, so I’ve reduced the price down to the minimum I’m able to at just £1.77.
I’d encourage you to take a look at The Fall of Policing which is available from Amazon using the link below.
Stay safe!
